The Save Old Manor Way Playground group was set up to oppose Bexley Council’s plans to sell the park for ‘development’, as part of a suite of land sales designed to bring in money and save on maintenance costs as part of its budget cuts programme. The park was scheduled to be in the first tranche of sites slated for sale, and a vigorous and effective campaign was run. Survey work found that there was evidence of dene holes, so the Council concluded that the site was unsuitable for ‘development’ and therefore removed it from the list of grounds proposed for disposal.
The Council has moved the goalposts concerning the amount of money that has to be saved and the impact on proposed cuts if they are stopped from selling the other sites, with threats being made regarding retention of park play equipment. Continued vigilance is required, so if you live locally, get involved.
